the book
Read either pages 184-217 OR a summary of them online. If you read a summary, post its URL in your response. Either way, write a 300 word response indicating what you agree with in the book, disagree with, and what you think about it generally.
In Emanuel Goldstein's "The Book", I think that most of the things he states are true. In one of the summaries that I've read it said"War helps people to accept the existence of this social and economic hierarchy." I do agree with this quote because when a place is at war with another place, society wants that powerful someone or group to be in charge and make the calls on the war. Also, it gives the proles (people on the bottem) the tought of never trying to be on top b/c there is a war going on. Another idea that i found i agreed with was "Collectivism doesn't lead to socialism. Wealth belongs to the new "high-class", the bureaucrats and administrators. Collectivism has ensured the permanence of economic inequality." I 100% agree with this statement because being that the party is a collectivism, they have their own ideas and ways and it doesnt promote individual ideas and thoughts. collectivism will always promote economic inequality and there will always be the people with wealth ontop, with the same ideas, and the individuals with great indiv. ideas on the bottem.I agree with basically everything that this book says. He says that the party wants to kill off every indpendent thought b/c it may jeporadize the party in controling the people. What i dont understand is why the party even does these things, what is their motives? Why do they want so much power an why do they want to control everybody? I also think that "the book" is just explaining what the party is doing and why, I'm not sure that i see the way it would guide a rebel, but it is explaining what everyone should know.
After reading about Emanuel Goldstein's "The Book", I see the reality in all of his statements. In "The Book" he explains all the tactics of the party and why they do all the things they do. The main reason is to keep the power going and to keep everyone ignorant. I came across a website where they compare "The Book's" meaning to President Bush's tactics. Certain things inside "The Book" Bush as made reality. "It does not matter whether the war is actually happening, and, since no decisive victory is possible, it does not matter whether the war is going badly. All that is needed is that a state of war should exist." Bush admits to knowing the fact that we cannot win the war on terror but yet we seem to still be at war. This is an explaination to the ideology "WAR IS PEACE"; Bush is keeping us at war to keep us ignorant to everything else going on around us. Goldstein also explains that the party continuously changes history in order to keep control of the people beneath them. By doing so, the people are always on the side of the party and no one else's. It reminds me of our History books. We learn about all the wars and battles America has won; about the numerous countries who have tried to destory us and we are completely against them. We are taught about our "american heroes" who we all admire. Yet when we grow up we learn the truth behing our "heroes". After realizing all of these simmlarities, I've come to the conclusion that we are living in a world where "The Book" seems to be the handbook for the political leaders who have the power. If things keep going the way they are, we will soon live in a world just like Winston's. Overall i consider the book to be a reality check to the people who aren't in power.
mr. coulson i was not aware that you would grade the posts today and i cannot do it at the moment because i am going to work. if possible for me to post when i come back it would be gladly appreciated...
In Emmanuel Goldstein’s book The Theory and Practice Of Oligarchical Collectivism, he states three chapters, “War is Peace”, “Strength is Ignorance”, and “Freedom is Slavery”. Within this time of the world, it is split into three parts, Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. “War is Peace” clearly helps understand that the world is split into three parts to keep the people calm and under fear. Two allied parts are unable to defeat the third part making the high class able to control the middle and lower class. Keeping war is keeping peace. I agree with Emmanuel Goldstein in his book because the events he discusses in his book are happening now. America is at war and the government keeps repeating terrorism because it brings fear to the people enabling the high class to control the middles class and lower class. I believe that “The Book” is a very powerful thing that many politicians in power are scared of because it gives the lower class ideas. “The Book” threatens the way the government runs society and it educates the lower class. The most powerful weapon is a mind that is educated and has a motive such as Winston in 1984. Emmanuel Goldstein provides an outlook on how the future may be. It tells the people the dirt that the government does and how the people can overpower the powerful. “The Book” defeats the quote, "They can be granted intellectual liberty because they have no intellect". Emmanuel Goldstein grants the lower class with intellect making them a threat. In the chapter “War is Peace”, Goldstein states Thus, the war is actually "waged by each ruling group against its own subjects, and the object of the war is not to make or prevent conquests of territory, but to keep the structure of society intact". In the past, wars were fought to keep hold of territories or to acquire new territory. In this war, it is said that it is being fought to keep the people under control. Everything is about who can control the most people and how, such as imperialism.
Sorry, i had to make a change to my post, here it is again:
I agreed with the point that society has always been divided. The high classes were in power, the middle class had some of the power but still were lesser to the high, and the lower class, the bottom of the barrel, was in servitude to all. The thing that angered me the most was how 85% of the population was considered a lowly prole while a miniscule 2% were in charge. We see that in today's society also, wealth is unevenly distributed to that small upper class and we in the larger lower class are given the scraps to fight over. The Party also deliberately created poverty. This was so that the masses would always struggle to stay alive. If the proles were to busy just trying to get by in life, they wouldn’t have the time to think for themselves. This is how the Inner Party secured their power.
Another haunting concept was the party’s use of technology to control its citizens. New technological advances had for the first time made an absolutely totalitarian society possible in 1984. By harnessing the telescreen, the party was allowed to keep citizens under constant surveillance and feed the population its propaganda. This kept you always in fear since the telescreen was always on. Like a divided society, the feeling of always being watched is seen today as well. Almost everywhere you go in New York City, there’s a camera on you. Someone with access to this technology could effectively follow you everywhere you went. This is a violation of privacy and many people are for it. In addition, the Patriot Act gives the government permission to your phone activities and to check up on what books you read.
How was George Orwell so ahead of his time? If he predicted all this, what does my future hold?
In Emmanuel Goldstein's "The Book", A summary of the major events that happened was when O'brien read about the theory and practice of oligarchical collectivism. I think this is true because O'brien reading the theory and practice of collectivism had led him to talk about war is peace and ignorance is strength. I believe he mean that when you goes to war you have to be a powerful leader and a leader of the social high working class. There are three types of social class that Emmanuel Goldstein's mention about he had mentioned about the upper class, meaning the high working class the middle class and lower class. These social classes are based on the inner party, outer party and the proles. Emmanuel Goldstein's had also talks about manifesto. The manifesto was based on Eurasia, Russia, Oceania, and British empire. These countries have been in war with other countries in the world. Most of these nation are part of the Eurasian army and the British empire. These nation are also members of the High class. The "two minutes hate" was introduce to the inner party. The inner party was a member of the high class. During the first world war the British and the Germany campaign hatred against the the England empire. A summary of the theory and practice of oligarchical collectivism is Emmanuel Goldstein's think propaganda as a chief enemy to the state. I disagree with this comment because not all propaganda that is created by the military in the war is a chief enemy to the state because not all countries care about going to war and used government tactics to destroy the homeland of people in other countries. Winston's hated the party and big brotherhood because they are part of the Emmanuel Goldstein conspiracy. I think the reason why hates O'brien because O'brien believes everything that Emmanuel Goldstein's tells him was true and also because Emmanuel Goldstein will chose to go to war with him because he is a part of the upper class and don't give any conspiracy to people in the lower class. Emmanuel Goldstein's is also a threat towards people who is a member of the lower class. He does not the lower class because he think based on collectivism they do not have any wealth towards socialism. I disagree because a lot of people today who are poor they have the right to do what makes there health important to them.
I agree with Emmanuel Goldstein in a lot of ways. The way his chapters are title tells us on how the world is today as it’s in the book 1984. Chapter 1 “Ignorance is Strength” it tells us how throughout the history of society, there has always been three class. These classes were the high, the middle, and the lower class. The middle class objective was to always gain high power but by doing this they used the lower class to advance but once they advance, the lower class stayed the same. I believe this is how the world has always been. Once those from the middle class prosper they never bring those who helped them get to the top. Emmanuel makes a lot of points in his book. Chapter 2 “War is Peace” can be related to the war that is going on at the moment. America uses the war in Iraq to keep Americans at fear and when fear is installed, it is very easy to control such as the war taking place between Oceania and Eastasia. The Inner Party is afraid of "The Book” because when a person reads it, that person becomes smarter than they were and this scares the Inner Party. If the Proles were in gain intellect, they could overthrow both parties and eliminate Big Brother which is the ultimate fear for the Inner Party.
The "book" is really just explaining what is really going on in 1984 and how it started. The chapters were named after the party slogans. The first one "war is peace" explains how the country got divided into three parts. In this chapter Goldstein explains how the caste system is a cycle. I agree with this completely. Every one wants to make it to the top to make other people go to their former spots in the cycle. I would say the other purpose of "the book" was to get people riled up and get them to rebel and then get captured. Another thought that I agreed with was that it if theirs hope it lies in the proles. Everything usually goes to the majority. I disagree with the whole idea of "the book" overall. It was no coincidence that while he is reading it Mr. Charrington turns out to be a thought police and also a telescreen the whole time. The thing could be that the book was a trap and O’Brian was a thought police also. Finally my thoughts about it in general are bad. Why? I despise the idea of totalitarian. It has ruined society and in 1984 there should be a real brotherhood and rebel against the party. The class system is also a bad idea. The lower classes should rebel because they outnumber the party members and the thought police. The final concept I disagree with is ignorance is strength. The party doesn’t tell them about their past to keep control over them. The Book was a bad idea because of its concepts and it could be their demise.
I agree with some statements in “The Book”, one of them which states that the war between the countries is continuous and never ending. I agree with this statement because the war is meant to suppress the people, and keep their minds off of thinking. This method is a great tactic used by the party to keep the people’s anger directed towards an enemy and their dependency on the party. It also eats up any extra territories that the country has left over after providing for the people the bare minimum, without improving the standard of living of the people. I agree with this statement because the Party uses an unbreakable cycle that puts the resources to use by creating weapons. The weapons are created at cheap labor, then used or destroyed at war and then more weapons need to be made. This cycle will never stop repeating because the items will never stop getting destroyed. This eats up any surplus resource that could be used for recreation or anything and uses it up during wartime. Also, I agree with a statement in “The Book” that states the battle of the classes between high, middle and low. This cycle is true as it exists today. The poor usually stay too poor to move anywhere up the ladder, the middle move up and down the ladder depending on who overthrows the high, and the high class is the controlling top percentile that prevents the middle from advancing. The Party however made it so that the middle class would not overthrow them by changing history as they see fit, glorifying themselves as the people’s saviors. This is a great tactic used by the Party to delete comparisons so that people cannot know how good they had it and how good they can.
