1)The motives behind O'Brien and the party's peculiar treatment was to see how far he could go.TO try and find out what he planned to do. Tried as hard as they could to get find out everything he was doin so they could use it against him.
2)The 3 steps were learning, understanding and accepting. Winston learned that the "book" was nonsence and that none of that would ever happen. Now it was time to understand and realize how the part works. Just the sake to have have and to be in power was what he had to accept.
3)Parsons daughter denounces parsons and sent him to prision. We are surprised to see him there because we've known him as a loyal party member. We know that he loves the party and wae also had the thought that it was a set up that he was there.
4)Room 101 was a place where you comfront your "worst nightmare". In this case rats were instons worst nightmare.Room 101 was like the end of the "jourey" for most prisioners. YOu'd eaither get shot going down the corridor or ultimatly give up all hope.
5)If they would have killed Julia and Winston they would have died martyr,, and they would have become insiprations to th proles so they would be able to revolt. The party does not allow this for that main reason. One example was Jesus or MLK.
6) I believe the there was no way that Julia and Winston could ever become reunited again because he gave up her name. THey would both now always think of that when they would see eachother. Hope was not even there anymore. THey had been tortured and both gave up.
7)Hope lies in the proles because they are the only ones that arent brainwashed. As soon as they become educated and aware of their surroundigs they can do whatever they'd like. The proles are the only ones who have hope and when they decid to use it , it can make a big diffence.
8)I would change the end of the novel. I would have liked to see winston stand up for what he believed in and die for that. I also wouldnt change it because it is a move realistic ending, being that he is just one person, its not realistic for him to change anything by himself.
9)The most important quote from the book to me is "If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever." The reason why i think this is the most important quote is because it basically came true for Winston in his future. He just keep getting battered until he loved Big brother.i also think it shows the worlds future , and this will be it if we dont do somethig about it.
10)I believe Orwell's point of this novel was to show what Burma was goin through and almost what he went throguh. I think the point of the novel is also to realize what can/ is going on in our world today. I think its a message " if you want change, do something about it, get educated an learn about your world. To help other places and to prevent from things like this happening.
1.I believe that the party watches Winston for seven years so they can try to find how bad his thought crimes actually are. Also so they can find out how will they torture him when they finally get him in the ministry of love; ie finding out that his biggest fear are rats. Also to find out the way that Winstons mind works so when he is being tortured O'brien can seem as his friend and enemy and know every thing that he is thinking.Lastly they may have thought that Winston could have led them to other thought criminal like JUlia.
2.The three steps are learning understanding and accepting. The reason that they just donbt let him die is because they don't to let anyone slip throught the cracks. They want every thought crimnasal to die loving big brother. Also they want to show the power they have over all other people that they can torture them to the point where they will believe anything that the party says.
3.The person that denouces Parson to the prison is his little duaghter because she "saw him saying that he hates big brother in his sleep". The reason that Winston is suprised to see Parson in the prison is because he was everything the party could hasve wanted. He loved them and did anything that they wanted and was even proud of his duaghter when she gave him up to the thought police.
4. In room 101 for Winston was rats because that was his worst fear. Room 101 is different according to every different person that encounters it. It usually holds something that the prisoner find unendurable and something that they wll immeaditley capitualate to.
5.The reason that they don't want anyone to die matyrs is because then that person still died hating the goverment. Also letting that person die stil against the goverment shows the people what kind out goverment they have. They will then soon uprise against the govermeent because they are able to see the wrongs that are being done. One matyr that changed history was Martin Luther King.
6.They were many ways for Julia and Winston to come together and meet because no one was watching them any more. No one cared anymore what they did because they were not a threat anymore. to reunite as they did before though would be impossible because they no longer loved each other. It was almost impossible to love each other after the way they both betrayed each other.
7.Hope lies in the prole because they are the only people who are actually people. Everyone in the oarty that that may have been old ebough to remember what happened before the revolution was already terminated and gone. Also becaue the proles are the majority of the people; they are 85% of the population.
8.The only thin that I would change at the novel was to more distinct in what was happening. I would not leave the reader to guess whether Winston really died or not because then they would get the meaning of the sotry that I wanted to portray. The way I would do this is with clear detail such as " while the blood bursted from Winston head he was not only dieing physically but also meantally.
9.I believe the most important quote is " If you want to see the future imagine a human boot stamping on the fave of humanity forever" I think this quote is really poerful and very literal. I t shows many peoplewhat they are in for is they dont wake up to the reality of what is going on in there society.
10. I believe that the majpr point of this npvel is power. That when one person gets to much power they abuse this and it ends up worse for the bigger 99% of the population. As O'Brien said the only goal for a person in poewer is to receive more power. The only way that they can do that is to snatch it from the people at the bottom.
1) The motives behind O'Brien and the party's perculiar treatment of Winston was to get as much information about him as possible. They wanted to see how much he was willing to do to go against the party. This way, they could know his fears and his dreams and use them against him.
2) The three steps are learning, understanding and accepting. While learning, they force you to understand that what you thought was correct is entirely wrong like they did to Winston about the book. When understanding, you must comprehend how thw party works and that their power is the only power that is as powerfull as they are. Winston now has to accept the party for what it is and love Big Brother.
3) Parsons' own daughter denounced him. SHe Heard him saying "Down with Big Brother" in his sleep. We are surprised to see Parsons here because he was the ideal citizen that the party wanted everyone to be like. He was a true lover of the party and was proud that his daughter denounced him.
4) Room 101 held nothing but more torture for Winston. Except now the torture would be his biggest fear: RATS. Room 101 holds the prisnors' biggest fear; it varies form person to person and Winston's was rats.
5) The party disallows martyrs becausethey are a a treat to the party. They are inspiration to the proles which may have the power to overthrow them. An example of a martyr would be Rosa Parks.
6)There was no way for them to reunite. They were now both 2 different people and they have changed their thought about the party due to the torture they had gone through. They had also both given up on everything that they were trying to accomplish together.
7) Hope lies in the proles because they out number the Party members. They are also more powerful if they untied as one. The proles have the history of what Oceania was like before it was taken over by the party in their minds. With that knowledge, they have power.
8) Yes, I would change the ending of the novel. Instead of Winston giving up, I wouldve let him continue fighting. I wouldve killed him hating the party because that was what he wanted. Instead he went out as a punk and LOVED BIG BROTHER....Bo0oo0o!
9) PEACE IS WAR is the most important quote in this novel. I believe this is true because through out history, all colonies, tribes, civializations, or nations have had to fight to recieve what they want to be at peace. In today's world, we live by this moto but it is never said; it is covered up by the meaningless words of those in power.
10) I think the major part in this novel was when Winston says he loves Big Brother. I think is important because this proves the true power that the party has. For Winston to say this is a huge deal because throught out the entire book we know that Winston was a BIG rebel and that he wanted very bad for the party to be overthrown. The fact that the fear can change a person's thoughts and feelings towards something is incredible and moving to me.
1) The party and O'Brian had been looking at Winston for 3 years for one main reason. Think that they knew he was going to be the bad egg of the bunch. They were waiting for the right moment to take action. Also to see how far he could take the torture.
2) The first of the three was that they didn’t feed him and beat him many times. The second was when they took his memory or made him forget many things. The last step was when he went into room 101. They didn’t kill him because they wanted him to love the party and big brother.
3) Parson was denounced by his own daughter. She denounced him because he was dreaming and saying down with big brother. We are surprised to see him here because he really loved the party.
4) Room 101 signifies a room full of the person fears. So it had Winston’s fear in it. Room 11 had rats in it because that was what Winston was scared of.
5) The party didn’t allow martyrs because if people died hating the government they could change the proles actions. If they died hating the government then it will reveal what kind of government there is. One example of a martyr was Gandhi.
6) Yes they could have met. They would have met but not like they used to because they lost affection for each other because they sacrificed each other to save themselves from their fears.
7) Hope lies in the proles because they make up most of the population. They are the only people that are not under the control of the party. The ones that know of the past are completely under the influence of the party now.
8) Yes, I would change the ending. Instead of ending it off with Winston loving big brother, I would have Winston leaving the ministry of love and then ends destroying the party. After he destroys the party he would have found out that big brother was a fake. The party was being controlled by an inanimate object.
9) I consider the quote “if there is hope it lies in the parole." I say this because it keeps reoccurring in the whole book. Also because the proles make up most of the population so if they rebel they could get what they want.
10) I think the main point of this story is that government has a lot of power. When Winston said he loved big brother that was an example of Winston being controlled by the power of the party. The government uses power to influence and control people by turning the power into fear.
1.O'Brien and the Party's peculiar treatment of Winston was to see how far he could go. They wanted to see what kind of actions Winston would take. The party also wanted to k now how he thought.
2.The three steps of the reintegration are learning, understanding, and accepting. These three steps were finding out exactly what the Party was. Learning how the Party worked, understanding what the Party did and why, aslo accepting the Party's ways.
3. Parson's daughter denounced him to the thought police and sent him to prison. We were surprised to see him here because he obeyed the Party. Parson wasn't too smart for the Party and he wasn't a threat.
4. Room 101 was the on thing all prisoners feared. It was a room where your deepest fears came true. As for Winston, Room 101 held rats in a cage to eat him alive. He was afraid of rats.
5. The Party disallowed martyr because it gave the proles inspiration to overcome the Party. This type of person dying hating the Party would have shown a great example for the Proles on what type of government they had. JFk is an example.
6. I believe there was a way for Julia and Winston to become reunited but it would not be the same. This would be beacuse they both betrayed each other. The feelings about hating the Party was no longer there and that's what brought these two together.
7. I have to oppose to this question. I don't believe that hope lies in the proles because they don't feel that anything is wrong with society. HOpe lies in the Outer Party, the middle class. They know what is goin on in the world and how things are worng. Its up to them to convert the Proles into over throwing the party.
8. Yes, I would change the ending of the book. I thought it was horrible. Winston should have died hating the Party instead of living loving the Party. Him dyin hatin the party would have been a significant turning point for the book and history stating that nothing could break a strong soul but it turned out Winston wasn't strong after all.
9. I believe the strongest phrase in the book is "War is Peace". As in today's soceity, we remain in war because it keeps the people afraid and fear is the best state to control someone. As in 1984, the world remained in war because everyone was afraid so they listened to Big Brother.
10. The major point in the novel is to point out the situation that Burma was goin through. It also points out how powerful a government can be and the things governments do to remain in power. This book opened eyes to many things such ass why governments have certain policies and laws.
Make way, Brandon's answers...
1) The Part and O’brien had been watching Winston for seven years. They do this to see how far Winston would go against the Party with his thought crimes. When they gathered all this information, they used it all against him.
2) There are three steps to Winston’s “reintegration.” First is learning, second is understanding and finally, accepting. When learning, you are forced to understand that what you thought was correct is completely incorrect, for example, “the book.” During the understanding, you must comprehend how the Party works and how their power is absolute. Winston now has to accept the party for what it is and love Big Brother. They don’t kill Winston because they want him to die loving big brother and the Party can never lose.
3) Parsons’ own daughter sells him out to the Thought Police. We are surprised to see Parsons of all people in prison because he loved the party. The Party was the totalitarian shepherd and Parsons was a naive sheep. Parsons loved the Party so much, that he was happy he was in prison. This way, he couldn’t do anything else against his beloved party.
4) Room 101 meant torture for Winston. It meant the worst for any prisoner; they feared stepping into 101 of all places. For Winston, it meant rats. Rats were what terrified him the most.
5) The reason that the Party disallowed martyrs is because that person died hating the government. You are supposed to die loving Big Brother. Further, letting that person die against the government shows flaw in the system. This could cause a revolution by the proles because they were able to see the defects of the Party. An example of a martyr who changed the world was Malcolm X. “"It is a time for martyrs now, and if I am to be one, it will be for the cause of brotherhood. That's the only thing that can save this country." Two days later, he was assassinated.
6) Explain. Julia and Winston couldn’t have reunited when they met up at the end of the book. He sold her out, even if she never found out about it, Winston would always know in his head. They didn’t love each other anymore, after all the torture they were two different people.
7) If there’s any hope at all, it lies in the proles. The proles make up the majority of the population and could potentially stop the party. People shouldn’t be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people. If the proles were educated and wanted a change, I’d be scared if I was Big Brother.
8) I actually enjoyed the ending of this book. It wasn’t happy and left you to filling the blanks. There were some things I’d add though. Maybe the book turns out to be a dream of Parsons or Winston is shot to death but dies hating the party with every cell of his being or the pages of the book explodes when you’re done reading. Then a poof of letters saying “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU….AND YOU OWE $8 FOR THE EXPLODING BOOK.”
9) “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever.” O’Brien, the sociopath made me shudder when he said this. Can you imagine a bleak, hopeless future like the one described. With the Inner Party in control, it doesn’t seem that far fetched.
10) The major point in the novel was the figurative bullet entering Winston’s skull. The party invaded his 3 inches, the last remnant of privacy. Winston was content with this, he loved and will now always love, Big Brother.
"if" by msi: 4/29
1)The motive behind obrien is to get winston to love big brother. They watch him for seven years is because to find out things about him so they can use in his reintegration.
2)The 3 steps in his reintegration is the first in that smell room with all those people. Going with out food and no shower. The next one was that room when obrien was giving winston pain then releasing it. The last was room 101, where his biggest fear lies, rats.
3)Who denounced parson so prison was his own daugther. We was surpised to see him there because Parson loved big brother.
4)What was held in room 101 for Winston wa rats. What this room signify for the prisoners was their biggest fear.
5)uhhhhhhhh not sure
6)Yes they reunited but winston couldnt look her in he eyes again because he sold her out
7)Hope lies in the proles because they are the only ones that wasnt brainwashed, so they can get educated and change there county.
8)Yes i would change the ending of the book by winston sticking to what he said and not care about big brother and die with that.
9)To me the most important phase was "to vision the future, imagine some one stomping on a human face
forever". I dont see how that is true i just like the the phase.
10)I dont think its the major point, but i think it is to stick in what you believe in because you can be the one that change. history.
1) The Party treats Winston so cruel and then nice is so that they could make him love Big Brother. The torture and love is used to disorient his brain. They watch him for so long to find out his strengths and weaknesses.
2) The three steps to reintegration first is the torture in which they rip his mind up to pieces. The second step is to put it back together giving him food and care so that he could feel cared for. The second is to bring him in room 101 so that they could torture him and make him give up his morals to love Big Brother. They don't just kill him because him dieing isn't enough, you die when you accept Big Brother.
3) Parsons was denounced by his daughter. We are surprised to find him there because Parsons is a Party lover. He was even pround when he found out that his daughter denounced him and glad that they got him before he did anything.
4) Room 101 was two tables far apart in a room that had a cage that was to be set to his face that were filled with rats. Room 101 for prisoners was to give them the unbearable thing for them, there biggest fear and to make them give up all there morals and integrity. After they were completely broken down they were ready to accept Big Brother.
5) The Party disallowed martys because there were no martyrs. People did not die for a cause because they died accepting the fact that they were wrong. Martin Luther King Jr. was a martyr that changed history.
6) There was not a way for Julia and Winston to reunite because they were probably being heavily watched. Also, there was no area that the Party did not reach out to. They wouldn't want to be reunited however because they both knew that they betrayed each other.
7) Hope lies in the proles because they are the majority of the population. Power lies in numbers and with the right education they could easily overthrow the Party. However to educate and sway them would be hard because they only care about drinking and pornos.
8) Yes I would change the ending of the novel because they left the end as a cliff hanger. I would make the book have a definite ending in which the torturer is actually his mother instead of O'Brien. Also I would make him die right before the book ended.
9) "There are no martys here" would be the most important phrase in the novel because it shows how they make a bad egg good even though they are going to die. This shows the type of rehabilitation that you go through if you defy the Party. It scares you how they can find a way to make you like them.
10) The major point of the novel is that if you don't educate yourself you will not know what is going around in the world. The proles are being taken advantage of and are not focused on the unfair treatment, but on government made entertainments such as pornos. The only way they would be able to educate themselves is by knowing the past which some of them do, but not getting distracted by the Party's tricks. If they were to group and do things other than drinking then a successful revolution would be made.
