Reflecting on Chapter 1

Read all of chapter 1 (to page 20), and answer the following questions:

1) Winston writes about two people who sit near him at the two minutes hate. Write three sentences characterizes each one.

2) Who is "the enemy of the people," and what is the name of his "vast, shadowy army?"

3) Winston writes the following in his journal:
"DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER (x5)," then "theyll shoot me i dont care theyll shoot me in the back of the neck i don't care down with big brother they always shoot you in the back of the neck i dont care down with big brother--"
Why are there typos? What does this mean, and can you sympathize with him? If so, why?

4) What should we do in our society (America, 2008) to get rid of thought criminals and thought crime?

5) Make a list of all the symbols that you have read about so far in chapter 1.

1.Well the first one was right behind him, a young pretty female who has dark hair. She puts evil in people(Winston). She is very violent by throwing the dictionary. The other person was O'Brien, he was curiously civilized. O'Brien was a large, burly man with a thick neck and a couse, humorous, brutal face.Winston always had a peculuar feeling that he felt the same way about Big Brother as he did.

2. The enemy of the people was Emmanual Goldstien and his army was called the Eurasian Army.

3.There are typos because he is writing in a diary and he is not use to writing. He wrote this excerpt very quicky and probably didnt care how it looked. He is so angry and upset at big brother and since he cant say these things out loud he is venting on paper. Can i sympathize with him?.. well yeah i could imagine he is living in a horrible place where people have hardly any freedom or thought or imagination or feelings.

1. The Girl-she is a bold-looking girl of about 27. she has thick hair with a freckled. And she is very atletic.
O'Brian- he is a large man with a thick nick. He has a coarse, humorous, and brutal face, amd has a certain charm of manner.
2. Emmanuel Goldstein is the enemy of the people. The name of his army was the Eurasian Army.
3. It was a typo because he was angry so he was writing very fast. This means shows Winston's hatred of the party's total control and his desire to break free of this control. I sympathize with him because the party was controlling all fo the people's life with the telescreen and the Big Brother poster

1. Winston smith was just taking his place in one of the middle rows where he had met two people he had never spoken before, one of them was a girl who he saw passed him in the corridors. She was a bold looking girl about 27,with thick dark hair, freckled face and swift, atlethic movements. She is violent to people. winston dislike her when she comes anywhere near him.The other person he met was a man named O'Brien. O'Brien was a large, burly man with a thick neck and a course, humorous, brutal face. He is a mysteries powerful civilized man, and sophisticated member of a inner party. Winston believe he is a member of the big Brother and a legendary group of anti-rebels.

2. The enemy of the people was Emmanuel Goldstein, the vast shadowy army was called the Eurasian Army.

3.There are typos done by Winston because he is writing a diary entry. While he was writing a diary entry he does not realize what he was writing after reading the importants of george orwell fact. After he read about George orwell facts, he had found out that Freedom of Rebellion can be shocking and by writing a diary it is an self expression that expresses his feelings as a violent crime. When he started to write into his diary, It seem that the fear of George facts grab attention to him when he had write "down with big brothers".I can sympathize with him becasuse he first over act of rebellion and that's basically him having a freedom of rebellion and for his hatred of party to have a active expression of his feelings about Totalitarian govenment and states control.

1. Mr. O'Brien who has spectacles at the end of his nose. He has a way of adjusting his spectacles that is like someone offering a snuffbox. O'Brien also had a brutal face.
The other person that is around him is a beautiful female. He believes she is a spy. She has sandy colored hair.

2. Goldstein was the conterrevolutionist and he was on par with Big Brother until he tried to revolt his army was called the Eurasian Army.

3. The "i" isn't capitalized and he is missing a lot of apostrophe's between "dont" and "theyll". It means that he isn't thinking straight because I doubt that if he was in his right state of mind he would have written that down. He gave a long hard thought of what he had just done, but only after he actually committed the crime. I do sympathize for him hating "Big Brother" but he is going about the process of getting to "Big Brother" all wrong. He hates his government because it's controling and monitoring everything that is done.

4. Tell someone and warn people about the "thought criminal".

5. Two minute hate, O'Brien's message to him, Goldstein's face on the two minute hate, "Big Brother" at the end of the two minute hate, the writings in the journal, pondering about the crime he committed.

2. Emmanuel Goldstien was the enemy of the people.

3. There are some typos in his diary beacuse he was writing it very quickly and carelessly. Winston was just tryin to get his thoughts on paper.

4. The only way that would stop crime and crime thoughts is if the government would give everybody a XBOX 360. This would prevent anyone fomr beign outside and everyone would care about gettin the next achievement instead of hurting someone.

1. The female was a pretty and young woman. She has a very piercing look and an uneasiness about her. She seems to also be dangerous and she might even be a spy. The male, O'Brian, seems to be a large man with a thick neck. He is humorous with a brutal face and isnt very attractive. Despite his "forbidable appearance he had a certain charm of manner".
2. Emanuel Goldstein was the 'ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE'. His army was called the Eurasian Army.
3. There are typos because Winston is very angry that he isnt realizing that he's writing these things wrong.
4. I think there should just be laws again such things like the thought police do to rights violations.

One charachter was the dark hairedgirl who winston disliked and felt a bad aura from. She is young and extremely good looking. She belives that sex should not be practiced and follows big brother's party. The other I belive was a Sandy Haired woman between him and Obrien. She was described as small and possibly had some type of religeous past or the government has established themselves as a religeon because she folded her hands as if in prayer. She seems to be an average person. And she loves big brother.
The enemy of the people is Emmanuel Goldstein for being a heretic. He is a threat to the government because his ideas are "daingerous". The funny part is how Goldstein's ideas are despised during the hate, and by the people in Oceana, but they are what we want in todays society. And they dont know where Goldstein is actually hideing out but they affiliate him with the euraisian army. And they use the two minute hate to picture Goldstein as some rebel leader who is to be hated, and then picture him with the Euraisian army so common sence would lead us to think that people would hate the euraisian army aswell. It's as if the government is trying to build an excuse to go to war with euraisia.
I realized that they timed the hate. I think it might be a possibility that the government did this on pourpose. They gave a two minute time period to rouse up the people filling them with hate and their bodies must naturally start pumping Adrenaline. Then they know it is only a short rush so they figure that after about two minutes the people would start dieing down and so they show them a picture of Big Brother to affiliate him with a calm feeling when they see Big Broter in comparison with Goldstein.
Winston wrote "down with big brother" in CAPS because he felt very strongly about it. But he knew he could be killed but he didn't care. The only thing I don't quite understand is why he had so many typeos (i instead of I) and so on. Possibly because he felt stongly about getting rid of big brother so he wrote it in bold, but afterward he felt the fear of knowing he could be killed so he panicked and started to write quickly and didn't pay attention to his spelling or punctuation. And who wouldent sympathize for the guy, he's alone, living in fear and constant survailence, and has ideas and feelings he wants to let out and cant do so freely.
Thought criminals and crimes deal with people who may not actually be in the process of commiting a crime but have the potential and the idea in their mind. We can find such people if we have constant public survailence, keep track of what people are reading, what they search for on the internet, and what they buy. But the real question isn't what we can do to eliminate "thought crime" but wheather it is right to do those things.
So far in chapter one there are many symbols such as 1)The telescreen, 2)Big brother, 3)The ministrie buildings and slogans, 4)The sash worn by the dark haired girl, 5)The overalls, 6)Thougt Police, 7)The diary, 8)And Goldstein.

3) HE WAS NOT THAT VERY GOOD IN WRITING AND HE WAS ALSO THINKING ABOUT THE THOUGHT POLICE AT THE TIME SO IT HAD PUT MORE PRESSURE ON HIM. IF THIS ISNT IT HE PROBALLY JUST STARTED WRITING BECUASE HE DIDNT LIKE IT BEFORE. I COULD SYMPATHAIZE WITH HIM BECUASE I MAKE ALOT OF MISTAKES AND I DONT ENJOY WRITING THAT MUCH.
4) I THINK WE SHOULD LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS. THEY ARENT DOING ANY HARM BY THINKING. IF THEY START THINKING ABOUT DOING IT THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED.
