Pick one of the statements below and write a response of 150 words (or more) justifying your position. This assignment is due by Monday, February 18th. Feel free to reply to the comments of others throughout the week.
1. Those who would exchange freedom for security deserve neither.
2. To assure our country's freedom, the government should be able to spy on its citizens.
3. Patriotism means supporting your government during times of war.
4. Torture of a person who is a threat to our country's freedom is acceptable as long as the person does not die.
5. People who are a serious threat to the government should be able to be held in prison without being charged.
6. The government has a right to know what people are reading so they can determine who might be a threat.
7. Society would be safer if we had security cameras in public places to catch potential criminals.
8. For an idea to exist, we must have words to express it.
9. Reporters should submit their work to government officials so they can determine if its a threat to the country.

I chose number 10. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war. I totally disagree with this statement. How could some one expect to keep peace by having war? That is like a double negative. I think one way to prepare for peace is to avoid war as much as possible. And if you’re preparing for war u should avoid peace. Come to think what if this is how our government thinks. If it is we are all in danger. They are trying to keep peace but are prepared for war. That is kind of like saying Hitler did all those horrible things to get peace. I think our government should look peace and war as to different topics and not at an equal level. They are the complete opposites of each other. It sort of makes sense in another situation but not this one. In our school they are prepared for good grades and also prepared for detention. Our school has a good cause but war never does.
10. The only way to prepare for peace is to be prepared for war.
I choose this quote because the only way that any society today has ever achieved peace is by the killing of hundreds, even thousands. In the United States, in order for the 13 colonies to achieve peace from the British was to go at war so they could be free from their holds. Today is a perfect example; the country is at war with Iraq because we are trying to form peace between the United States and Iraq. Making a document won’t work and other being attacked by them, war was forced upon this country to achieve peace. Peace is like a prize that has to be won; it can never be given to one or even handed. The shed of sweat, gunpowder, and blood are the only way any country has ever reached peace such as the Native Americans, France from King Louis, the Jews in Germany, and Africa.
I disagree with the following statement "The government has a right to know what people are reading so they can determine who might be a threat." Because i feel that this is going against freedom of speech. I believe people should be able to read whatever they want and also write whatever they want. If the government had to read every little thing I read, I would feel very violated. I feel that is an invasion of your privacy. So many people have valuable things to say, and if the government thinks its "too much information" or "a threat to the country", we won't be able to read or publish anything. The gov't will only let us see what they think is enough. We will all be clueless to know what is really going on. I feel as if the government hides already enough things that society should know, so if they have this advantage, we wouldn' know half of the things that are really happening. I also think that the gov't won't really even be able to know what is a threat or not. There will be so many writing documents to look at, and it would be a waste of time.
I disagree with statement number four. I don't think that anyone should be tortured even if they r a threat to our country. Who gave man the right to torture another man? No one has been granted this right so it should not be done. Yes, people should be punished for certain things but no one should be put through any sort of torture through the hands of another man. This is another way to take away a person's rights. No one has the right to take any man's rights away. No matter the magnitude of any crime that has been committed, people should still be treated as people and not as savages or anything other than people. I personally think everyone deserves a second chance due to the fact that people make mistakes because we are all human. No one should be judged by their mistakes, let alone be tortured because of a mistake.
"The way to prepare for peace is to prepare for war."
I agree with this quote, because in order to prepared for peace is to seek war. Judging from our historical backgrounds/events of violence. There should not be no doubt that we, humans, are not predisposed to living together in peace and harmony. The desire for peace is as engimatic as a arithmetical problem for which there can be no equation. The abuses of human values need to defend themselves from the unpredictable war, before there is no peace in the world of judging people what is rightnwrong. The struggle in the world today could go indefinitely if there is no war engaged in the battlefield today, The limits of the war battles would cause more violence which could certainly approaches to triple negative 0 as it approaches negatively indefinet towards human abuses in the nation. This problem can be solve , arithmetic, if there is more violence that can be parameterized, integrated by the region bounded by the xyz plane limits, centured around the imshow of a cylindrical homogeneous coordinates in the first octant.
i choose number 10 "the only way to prepare for peace is to prepare for war"... i really disagree with this quote. That's because peace is not won with war. War only brings violence which results in more violence. Peace is won in a non-violent way. If war were to bring peace then why is earth not the most peaceful place on earth? We have had so many wars and brought so much destruction to our land and this is supposed to be peace? The war we are in now with Iraq,is the end of the war really going to bring us peace? Or just a grudge the Iraqi people will hold inside until they decide to attack again? War never brings peace it just brings harm and violence no matter what the intention was for starting it in the first place. Peace should be gained by any other means that is not associated with violence.
1.Those who would exchange fredom for security deserve neither.
I disagree,If you want to get something sometimes you have to give up something ,and that does not mean you don't deserve neither of them . For example Harriet Tubman how give up her fredom in order to gain security for her and other african amricans . She know the dangers and that anyone how help fugitives to hild could go to preson , or if you was black you could lose your fredom . She created a underground railroad to hild fugitives or runaway slaves .In virginia the south the law meant that no African Americans could feel safe . Harriet Tubman created a place were all African Americans could feel safe . Some African Americans werw free but the slave huntera sometimes would take them and think they were fugitives . Just because you give up your fredom for security it does not mean you deserve neither . If something is that important you should do anything you can to get it .
The government has a right to know what people are reading so they can determine who might be a threat.
I disagree with this statement because if the government does that, it is an invasion of privacy and a violation of the first amendment that states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." I think that if the government decides to know what people are reading, it will be more of a Monarchy government than a democratic government where no one can express their thoughts and feelings but only the government. This country should be a place where people can have the freedom to express themselves, not a place where you cant have any privacy because is spying you to know everything you are reading just to know wheather you are a treat to the country.
I apologize for my lateness in posting.
But I was thinking about the eighth bullet, and it doesn't seem right to think that the only way for an idea to exist is if we can put it into words. Even though the written and spoken languages are vast and complex they still have limits as to what they can describe. For example we have a word for an emotion but the idea of that emotion is intangible. An idea exceeds the limits of language because it can have no limits. A persons mind has amazing capability. And if we think about it logically a person must have had an idea in order to feel the need to create a word to describe that idea. If the idea didn't exist then the word for that idea wouldn't exist either.
I just feel like playing the devil's advocate for a minute. Everyone seems to disagree with the tenth bullet. But the way I see it you can't have one thing without the other. So in order to have peace you must have war. The same way there would be no such thing as rich people if there wheren't poor people, or any such thing as clean if dirty didn't exist.
So in order to experience peace we must be willing to deal with war.
i choose number six, and the reason that i picked number six is because the response that it gave me to read it. the idea that the goverment should be able to see what every person reads to determine terrorism is totally ridiculous.1 reason why is beacause if this was to happen innocent people would be persecuted for curiosity or just beacuse the goverment said that they were looking at questionable material when they are innocent. 2 is true genuis that are trying to take over the world arent really goin to take out a how to take over the world book and sit and read it in a public library. so if the goverment wantred to know what we were reading at all tie would invovle the spying on us which would next spiral out of hand leading to them violating our privacy. even if this were to ,as though it wasent the most rediculous rule, what would be next for the goverment, a world similar to 1984 and a brave new world.
Why must we display non-secure items?
Well azito...
If you want to be a slave then by all means go ahead, but if u really want peace you must prepare for war. Do u think the spartans wanted war? No, they wanted peace so bad that they were willing to go to war for it. Plus preparing for war can also save you from going to war. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" avoids a lot of confrontation. Violence is not the answer, violence is the question and YES is the answer!
Well Kiki...
That's incorrect! It's pointless to go to war if you lose! The Native Americans prepared for war and look where they are now... (casinos). The Native Americans should have used their brains because they were heavily out-gunned, out-armored, out-planned... etc...
Well Nati...
I hope you agree with this statement when you're on the train and it gets blown up by a terrorist. Hundreds of innocent people killed, thousands injured, all could have been avoided if only the government had been monitoring the individuals interests. An invasion of privacy would be the least of your worries when your plan gets hijacked. (Not that they don't do it anyways)
Well pineaple,
I can't disagree with your reason, but if the individual has certain information that can be used to save other lives then by all means torture him.
lmao andrae...,
Well if you really want to go to war to prove something it's just a matter of time before we're all dead. War just proves what country is willing to sacrifice more of their people, kind of like punching a wall, how long are you willing to punch it before your hands break? The only way to have a clean war without sacrificing any of your own is by making sure the war is swift meaning you'll have to kill tons of their people.
Well Omar...
We're in '08 upgrade man...
War only brings more war if you don't know how to do it right. How are you ever to get anything done without war? Asking? Begging? I think not. Slaving! There we go... good luck with that.
Well Mr. or Mrs. Sarp...
I think you've got this all wrong. The government is not prohibiting us to do things. They're just checking up on us and making sure we're not planning a genocide or something. If the government wants to know what I'm reading at the cost of me knowing that I can go on an airplane terrorist-free then by all means knock yourself out!
Well Justin...
Although you are correct how can we have an idea without a word to express it? Ideas give meanings to words not vice-versa. So if your going to make a word that expresses an extremity then it just helps others grasp the idea of your feeling. How else will you communicate with others describing your feelings?
Well Georgy...
I think you're taking this quote to an extreme. You are talking something more along the lines of Robespierres' killing spree. I'm thinking something more of the government needs a warrant in order to persecute you. Not some fruity little warrant either like the ones you need to search someone if they're stealing something. (Which is completely ridiculous F.Y.I) I mean something more along the lines of you need a lot of evidence, but not too much.
And now... for the piece you've all been waiting for.
I will choose quote number 7 because the song "3s and 7s" is so great, but not great enough for me to write two 150 word essays on them.
You don't even know how helpful 7these cameras would be. Catch 12thieves, monitor suspicous 15behavior, catch murderers, 18 rapists, kidnappers. And the proof would be the video itself. Not a 30drunken witness, or a blind sinile man half a mile away. Catch the 43criminals in an instant. Even if 49the crimes were to be done in the areas out of sight of the cameras, at least the police will know 70where not to look for crime. Who 77cares about privacy and 81violatoins? This is a time of 87terrorism where tomorrow is not 92certain. Is your life worth the 98government eavesdropping on your conversation? Plus maybe if we're lucky they're already doing it and we just don't know about it yet. What you don't know won't hurt you. 130
What's so bad about the government spying anyways? It's not like their going to tell anyone... of course the stuff will be confidential and not to be spoken about, as if you were confessing your sins to the pope.
It's because of Justin's stupid picture... Thank you Justin, know I have to click the "X" everytime i want to say something here...
The quote that I chosed was number 8. Which is "for an idea to exist, we must have words to express it". The meaning of this quote is that in order to have your idea spred is to have proof of it. Like for example, in science there are theorys. And to have your theory out you need to have proof of it. And in math, their are theroms, and to have your therom a therom, you need proof of it. This work for you to mr. coulson. In order to have you teaching job, you need to have a resume. And if you dont, and just say your life history and dont have proof, you are not getting hired. And in stored, in order to puschase tobacco products or buy liquor, you need to have proof of age well known as an ID.
