Dear class:
I'm sorry I'm not there today. I'm incredibly ill (I'll spare you the details, but they're on my away message if you're curious). Anyway, here are the questions I'd like you to respond to tonight (read until the paragraph "It had happened that morning" on page 9):
1) Identify as many symbols as you can find in the first 9 pages, and tell what their significance is. A symbol is any object, character or other concrete representation of ideas, concepts, or other abstractions. For example, in the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, a red octagon is a symbol for the traffic sign meaning "STOP".
2) What is Winston worried about even more than the police patrol?
3) Where does Winston work?
4) What are the slogans of the party? What do you think they mean?
5) What does Winston do that, if caught, he would likely be likely be punished by death for?

1. The fact that the ministry building being so much bigger than all the others in meant to intimidate society. Also the ministry of love not having windows and having such an ominous enviorment is meant to drive fear into those who are sent to ministry of the love. because to the goverment the peoples fear is there power.
2. Winston is worried more about the thought police.
3.Winston works in the ministry of truth.
4.WAR IS PEACE- meaning that to have peace you have to be willing to fight for it(if you want peace prepare for war)
FREEDOM IN SLAVERY- meaning to have freedom you have to fall into a rigid society that reflects slavery.
IGNORANCE IS STRENTGH- if you dont know what will hurt you, you will never get hurt. (ex. if you dont know that a dog just used you tooth brush its not going to bother you while you are using your tooth brush to brush your teeth)
5.He is writing his thoughts in a journal that he has bought from a store in the free market.
1.Well when winston mentioned VICTORY gin and cigarettes, i felt that that symoblized that they didnt have any name brands, everything was made by one company. Also the posters on almost every corner and wall, was put up to asure people that "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOUR EVERY MOVE". i think that was meant to scare the people living there, and to scare them into doing everything they say. He mentions "there are no longer any laws, but if detected..it would be punished by death" There was no laws but many restrictions.
2."Only the Thought Police mattered."
3.He works in the Ministry of Truth/.
4.WAR IS PEACE. i believe they try to put this into peaople heads by making them believe that if they are at war it equals peace.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. i honestly dont know what this means. But my guess it that "they" may say you have freedom but you are really a slave to society.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. I believe this means that if you are ignored it will make you stronger. It will make you think and maybe eventually go crazy.
5.He purchased a diary/journal from a free market.
1. As Winston walks into this building there is a big poster with the face of man on it. It is also hung up around the city. I see this as a symbol with of great importance because it is a huge picture which is too gib to be hung indoors. I also think the exaggeration of the size of the Ministry of Truth is another symbol to show how this minisrty has much more power over the other ministries.
2. Winston says the thought police are the ones to worry about, not the patrol police.
3. Winton works at The Ministy of Truth.
4. The three slogans are: WAR IS PEACE, meaning we cannot achieve peace without going to war, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, meaning there is no real freedoom because of all the orders, rules and laws we must follow, and lastly, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, meaning that without knowledge of whats around you, you then gain the power think and ask questions which gives makes you stronger.
5. Winston bought a journal at a free market.
The posters everywhere show how "Big Brother" is constantly watching. So even though there are no laws it allows anyone in charge to do anything they want and if you do something they don't like they'll find out. Then there are the four ministrie buildings where they represent four of the largst aspects of what is needed for society to function. You control them you control society. And it is ironic how the names represent what we would normally consider the opposite of what they are. Not to mention that the ministrie of truth is focused as the centerpoint for the other three which is why the slogans deffine what the other three ministries are. And like the ministrie of love deals with love I would not be surprised if the ministrie of truth worked with deciveing the public and eraseing the facts or evedence that could cause problems with the current leader.
Winston is scared of the thought police.
Winston works at the ministrie of truth.
Their slogans are "War is Peace", "Freedom is Slavery", "Ignorance is Strength". All they basically mean is that in life everything has an equal and opposite pair it can't do without. In order to have one thing you need to have the other. Life's law of equivilent exchange. In order to have the good things in life you must be able to deal with the bad.
Winston boughta book to use as a diary and if caught is liable to be harshly punished.

1)I saw two symbols that could be important to this story. The poster with the man with the mustache. The poster seems like its looking at you no matter where you go. Another symbol is the telescreen that could represent the police of this story.
2) Its just the thought of the police that matter and not actually then.
3) He works in the ministry of truth.
4)The slogans of the party are "war is peace","freedom is slavery", and "ignorance is strength" The first one means that if u want peace you should be ready for war. The second might be that since we used have slavery you should be prepared for it if you want to keep freedom. The third one might be that if you dont like to except things they could never hurt you.
5) he has bought a journal from a free market that they are really not allowed to go to.
1. One example of symbols is the poster that says "Big Brother is Watching your Every Move". i think it means that the party is watching their every move so they should be careful what they do. Another example is the telescreen which is used as a propaganda to scare the people.
2. Winston is worried about what the thoughts of the police
3. Winston works at the Ministry of Truth
4. WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. i think they are tryin to brainwash the people by making them believe that in order to have peace, you must go to war,to have freedom you must be a slave and to be strong, you must be ignored.
5. Winston bought a journal from the free market
!) The big poster of Big Brother, The Victory branded items, the television that has a built in camera, the signs that say War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength, Freedom is Slavery, The Tall pyramid looking tower and the Tower of Love, Peace and Plenty.
@) He's worried about the women being spies.
#) He works at one of the Ministries in the area of the other large towers
$) War is Peace... meaning to get peace you need to go through war
Ignorance is Strength... meaning what you don't know won't hurt you
Freedom is Slavery... meaning...
%) Write in his journal being that the journal itself is illegal.
1. There were signs everywhere that illustrated words that read "Big brothers" it seemed as if they were being watched. I also agree that the telescreen could represent the police.
2. The thought of the police was what really actually mattered.
3. Winston works at the ministry of church.
4. The three phrases read...
WAR IS PEACE: I believe they are trying to say that without fighting and winning a war, there will be no peace. This can then be something they would want others to believe.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY: This is saying that though we are thought to believe that we have freedom, several rules and laws forbid this statement from being true.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH: In other words if you do not know something asking questions will give u a sense of strength.
5.He expressed his thoughts in a journal he purchased at the market.
1.One main symbol that i notice is the poster of Big Brother cause its always watching you.
2.The thought police
3.In the Ministry of Truth
4.slogans are war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.
*fight for what you want
*you are never free of slavery
*you are stronger when nothing is known
5.He went to the free market to buy a diary
1)Big Brother is wathching(an eye) the telescreen is the though police. The pretty women is spys.
2)The though police
3)The mintry of truth
4)WAR IS PEACE isin order to have peace you have to go to war. FREEDOM IS SLAVEY is that you are a slave under the government and freedom is not an opinion. IGNORACE IS STRENGTH the fact of not knowing so you dont no. For example the though police erase indentity so your past is unknown
5)He brought a diary
